It is a fitting tribute that exactly 25 years after starting up Hunter's Wines that Jane Hunter be appointed a Companion of the Order of Merit for Services to Viticulture. The appointment adds to an already lengthy list of accolades for Jane, who in 1993 was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. (O.B.E.)
JANE HUNTER - GROWING A LEGACY - written by Tessa Anderson
From Marlborough to Manhattan, from Rapaura to the Ritz –
the inspirational story of one woman and her place in history of
New World wine.
In the last 30 years the province of Marlborough has moved from relative obscurity to become New Zealand’s largest and best known wine region with a reputation for producing some of the world’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. This huge potential was something that was recognised back in the early 80’s by Ernie Hunter of Hunter’s Wines, when he founded his fledgling winery in the region’s Wairau Valley.
In 1987, Ernie’s dream almost died with him when he was tragically killed in a motor accident. The marketing and public face of the winery, he was largely responsible for the initial international acclaim Hunter’s Wines received.
Some 20 years on, Jane has become internationally recognised in her own right as a leading vintner and one of the pioneers of Marlborough’s Sauvignon Blanc success. She is also the recipient of many awards and acknowledgments, including the prestigious Women in Wine Award and an OBE. Her story is one of perseverance and resilience and it’s finally told in the new biography, Jane Hunter: Growing a Legacy, written by Tessa Anderson.

Hunter’s Wines (NZ) Ltd is now accredited as having a “Sustainable Winery” through Sustainable Winegrowers New Zealand (SWNZ)
SWNZ was developed to provide a "best practice" model of environmental practices in the vineyard and winery and guarantee better quality from the vineyard through to the bottle. SWNZ also further substantiates the industry claim "New Zealand wine, the riches of a clean green land".
Tui at Hunter’s Wines
Natural Habitat Restoration for the Wairau Plain"
Tui and other native birds would once have been common on the Wairau Plain and around Marlborough. Before humans arrived the Plain was covered in a mix of swamp forest, dryland forest and large flax wetlands, all of which would have been teeming with native birds and animals. While tui are occasionally seen in Marlborough during winter, they are not common anymore because there is very little suitable habitat and food available for them.
Thanks to Jane Hunter’s environmental awareness and foresight the extensive native garden planted autumn 2000 at Hunter’s has been attracting a number of Tui over the past few years. Now each winter and spring the gardens attract quite a populace of these birds along with a number of other native species.
Recently the Marlborough District Council opened up a register for sightings of Tui on the Wairau Plain; happily Hunter’s were able to report their seasonal inhabitants.
